NCAA Division I Eligibility Regulation- (Proposal No. 2009-64)
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has adopted new legislation that affects prospective student-athletes who have completed nontraditional coursework. Nontraditional coursework is defined in NCAA Division I Bylaw 14.3.1.2.2 as "courses taught via the Internet, distance learning, independent study, individualized instruction, correspondence, and courses taught by similar means…" The NCAA's academic and membership affairs staff has outlined the following protocols for Proposal No. 2009-64.

If nontraditional coursework is completed prior to August 1, 2010, it will be evaluated using the current legislative standards in Bylaw 14.3.1.2.2. The nontraditional coursework may be subject to the prospective student-athlete review process if such review is warranted; however, the coursework does not have to meet the guidelines outlined in Proposal No. 2009-64. If nontraditional coursework is completed on or after August 1, 2010, (even if a prospective student-athlete enrolled in the course prior to August 1, 2010) the requirements of Proposal No. 2009-64 will be applicable to the coursework. An institution may request an initial-eligibility waiver on behalf of the prospective student-athlete if the coursework does not meet the new legislative parameters and the prospective student-athlete has an initial-eligibility deficiency.

NCAA Division II and III currently have not adopted this legislation. Therefore, courses taken by a Division II or III prospective student-athlete would not be subject to the requirements of Proposal No. 2009-64. The Columbia County School System (Policy IED) requires that "Any on-line course for credit must have prior counselor approval to ensure that it satisfies graduation requirements." In light of these changes, nontraditional coursework taken without following the expressly written approval process will not be accepted for the purpose of meeting graduation requirements for the Columbia County School System.
